Reece Dam on the Pieman River, West Coast Tasmania

Zeehan is the turnoff

Corinna and the Pieman

Corinna is a former gold town on the Pieman River, deep in the Tarkine, and Zeehan is the turnoff you take to reach it.

There is almost nothing there, which is the entire attraction. The rainforest comes down to the water, the river runs dark with tannin, and the quiet is total.

Getting there involves the barge across the Pieman if you are continuing north, which is part of the experience and also something to check the timetable for before you commit to it.

From Zeehan it is around an hour, and the road demands your attention. It rewards an unhurried day rather than a dash.

Practical

Before you go

  • Check the barge operating times and conditions before you set out.
  • Fuel up in Zeehan. There is nothing between here and there.
  • Mobile coverage disappears well before you arrive.

Stay the night at the Heemskirk

Fuel, a feed and a bed, on the corner where the Tarkine road begins.
