In town, minutes away
The Zeehan museum, and why to give it longer than you think
The Zeehan museum, properly the West Coast Heritage Centre, is in the town itself, and it is the reason this town is worth more than a night's sleep.
- From the hotelIn town
It covers the whole arc of West Coast mining, from the mines and the people who worked them through to the rolling stock and the minerals that came out of the ground. The collection is considerably better than a town this size has any right to hold.
That is because Zeehan was not always a town this size. At its peak it was the third largest town in Tasmania, and the buildings along Main Street were built for a population many times the current one.
The collection belongs to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and forms part of the State Collection, which is not a sentence you expect to write about a town of this size. It is the reason the place is worth more than a quick look.
There is a good deal more inside than mineral cabinets. There is a recreation of what working underground was actually like, rolling stock you can climb aboard, a photographic gallery, the old courthouse, and a display on the Masonic Lodge. There is a gift shop on the way out.
The thing our guests tell us, more than they tell us anything else about the town, is to allow more time than you think. People walk down expecting to give it half an hour and come back a good deal later. If it is the only thing you do in Zeehan, it is the right thing to have picked.
The Gaiety Theatre is part of the same story. It was built when this was a boom town with money to spend on entertainment, and it is still standing.
One weekend a year the building does something else entirely. The gem and mineral fair is held here on 7 and 8 November 2026, and it is the busiest the Heritage Centre gets all year.
