Sand, dune and surf on the west coast of Tasmania

Between Zeehan and Strahan

Henty Dunes

Henty Dunes is a large area of coastal sand dunes on the road between Zeehan and Strahan, and one of the few places on this coast where the landscape is genuinely playful.

The dunes rise well above the surrounding scrub and run back from the beach. People come to walk them, to sandboard down them, and in permitted areas to drive them.

It is an easy stop to fold into a Strahan day, because it sits on the road between here and there rather than out on its own.

Go early or late if you can. The light on the sand at either end of the day is the reason most of the photographs of this place exist.

Practical

Worth knowing

  • Check current access and vehicle rules before driving on the dunes.
  • There is no shade at all, so take water and a hat.
  • Sandboards are not provided, so bring one if that is the plan.
  • Sand gets into everything. This is a good argument for a room with a hose nearby.
